At Lake Zell

Resting place for birds and frogs has been preserved

With the support of Spitz, Hofer and Zurück zum Ursprung, the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union is saving an amphibian pond and its surroundings from disappearing at the southern end of Lake Zell. 

For 111 years, the Austrian Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union has been acquiring and maintaining a wide variety of areas throughout Austria in order to create habitats worth living in for animals.

The most recent success story of the conservationists: an amphibian pond near Lake Zell. It was dredged and a second pond was added. The main beneficiaries are the grass frog and common toad, as well as the northern lapwing and whinchat.

Austria's oldest nature conservation organization also ensures that the meadow is mowed once a year and the reeds are cut. The late mowing, which only takes place once, allows the plants to develop seeds, resulting in a great diversity of species. The seeds are also valuable food for many bird species in the fall and winter.

In the near future, the nature conservation association plans to erect an original Pinzgau fence along the cycle and hiking trail so that the animal refuge remains as undisturbed as possible by human "intruders".
