In a dreamy castle park, on the beach at sunset or with lots of glitter in Las Vegas: There are many different locations and themes for getting married. But when is a marriage (abroad) valid in Austria? A legal expert on forced weddings, Texan "campfire marriages" and long-distance marriages approved by mothers.
A controversial case involving an Afghan couple: the man wants to divorce by mutual consent under Austrian law. However, there is no marriage certificate. The marriage was once entered into in Afghanistan by a mullah, an Islamic religious scholar. The legally required registration with the authorities in the state, which is now once again ruled by the Taliban, is missing. Two Austrian lower courts put a stop to the divorce, but the Supreme Court (OGH) took a different view.
