It may have "only" been a test, a game to prepare for the spring season, but in the end the result speaks sobering volumes: Austria's runners-up Red Bull Salzburg were clearly beaten 6-0 at home by Germany's record champions FC Bayern!

A small "bull" straw: As the Munich team will be back in the league next weekend, it can be assumed that they were much further ahead in their preparation than the Salzburg team, who don't start for another two weeks ...

"Bayern were two classes above us in every respect," said coach Thomas Letsch. "Of course we all imagined it would be different," admitted the successor to the hapless Pepijn Lijnders. "I said beforehand that we wanted to show that we were up to something - at least we were able to do that. The game showed in a tough way that we still have a lot of work to do." Goalkeeper Alexander Schlager agreed: "A 0:6 is obviously no fun, but there were a lot of things in there that we can learn from for our spring preparations."

In front of 26,107 spectators in the Bullen-Arena in Wals-Siezenheim on Epiphany Day, Salzburg's new head coach had to improvise a lot for his first starting eleven. In addition to the long-term injuries and convalescents such as Maurits Kjærgaard and Karim Konaté, five other players were out at short notice due to illness, including new signing Karim Onisiwo, Oscar Gloukh, Aleksa Terzic, Bobby Clark and Dorgeles Nene.

Bayern scored at will
Early on in the game, center-back Dier, who was rarely in demand with Vincent Kompany in the autumn, put the visitors in front with a header from a corner (10th). Around a quarter of an hour later, a mistake in the build-up led to 0:2, with Alexander Schlager deflecting Harry Kane's shot away, but Thomas Müller poked the ball into the net ahead of Amar Dedic, who was deployed in the defensive center (24). Before the break, Michael Olise gratefully accepted a gift from Schlager and fired into the far corner (29').

Five days before the away duel with Mönchengladbach, Bayern did not let up on the return of former Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund and gave the Bulls, who had changed all eleven positions at the break and were rejuvenated once again, no room to breathe. Olise (48'), Kimmich (55') with an awkwardly deflected long-range shot and the 18-year-old Dane Arp-Jensen (76') ensured a deserved victory for the team led by ÖFB team player Konrad Laimer (until 63').

The home side hardly had any real chances to score. Only Edmund Baidoo forced Bayern goalkeeper Daniel Peretz to make a save in the absence of Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich (53').

On Thursday, Salzburg will travel to the training camp in Faro (Portugal) until January 17. Things will then get serious at the end of January against the two big Madrid clubs. In the Champions League, the Bulls, who have no chance of promotion, will host Real on January 22 and Atletico on January 29. This will be followed by the Cup quarter-final against LASK in Linz on February 2, before they return to the Bundesliga on February 9 in Klagenfurt.
