Carinthia's largest river should actually provide recreation. But carelessly discarded garbage not only infuriates walkers, but also politicians. Community representatives see it as the mountain rescue service's duty.

"You can't enjoy a walk in nature," says a young man from Spittal angrily as he walks along the Drau. "I couldn't believe my eyes. Everything was just full of garbage!"

Nature lovers are very displeased
And the worst thing: "It wasn't just bottles, diapers and plastic being thrown away here, there was also a pile of still-wrapped food!" He angrily tells the "Krone" newspaper: "Not only does it pollute nature, it smells like you're on a garbage tip!"

Mountain rescue service should take action
The man from Spittal took his displeasure to the town, which is aware of the problem. "The area along the Drau is simply littered!" says Deputy Mayor Angelika Hinteregger, shaking her head. She herself has already made some terrible discoveries: "As well as garbage, I also found a cage with a cat in it!" In her opinion, "certain places should be monitored. The mountain rescue service should also check places."

The SP politician is in favor of schools and kindergartens starting litter collection campaigns. "However, it is unacceptable that children are constantly cleaning up the mess of adults! Litter offenders should be punished," she demands.
