After several avalanches on Wednesday, there was another avalanche alert on Thursday. A 63-year-old German ski tourer was buried in the Lasörling group in East Tyrol. The German has since been rescued. He was flown injured to Lienz hospital.

On Thursday, a 63-year-old German national was planning to climb the south-eastern pre-summit of the Kauschkahorn (2902 meters) together with a ski tour group.

At an altitude of approx. 2770 meters above sea level, the 63-year-old instructed his group to stop, as he intended to enter the southeast slope there and have each group member ski it individually on his signal. He was therefore the first to enter the slope at around 1.50 pm. According to the participants, a snow slab broke loose after just a few meters of skiing, which subsequently covered almost the entire width of the slope, swept him away and finally buried him completely.

Victim freed from snow masses
After a search with the "avalanche beeper", the German was finally located by a probe hit at a burial depth of around 2.5 meters and was subsequently dug out by the participants of the ski tour group. "He was initially unresponsive, but then came to," reports Siegfried Kristler from the Defereggen Valley Mountain Rescue Service.

After first aid at the avalanche cone, the avalanche victim was rescued by an emergency helicopter and flown to the district hospital in Lienz with injuries of undetermined severity. The two emergency helicopters Christophorus 7 and Martin 4 as well as the police helicopter, dog handlers from the Prägraten, Defereggental and Sillian mountain rescue services, the Alpine police and a police patrol were deployed.

Police helicopter rescued the rest of the group
The other five members of the group did not descend on their own. The Libelle Tirol police helicopter flew them down to the valley on a rope. Avalanche danger level 3 prevailed on Thursday - considerable danger.

Avalanches claimed the emergency services
Several avalanches had already occurred in Tyrol on Wednesday. The operation on the Hintertux Glacier was particularly dramatic, where the crew of the Alpin 5 emergency helicopter was able to dig out a buried victim. After resuscitation, the man - a 30-year-old German - was flown to the hospital in Innsbruck. His condition was still critical on Thursday, according to reports.
