A fine of several hundred euros - that's how much drivers can pay if they park in private parking spaces or even just turn around. Four parking zones in one part of Klagenfurt are already being heavily taxed. Local residents are desperate.

The private parking spaces are a cost trap. Especially in the Viktring district of Klagenfurt, where 11,000 people live. Parking or often just turning around in these ominous parking lots costs a lot of money. Often you drive quickly into a free parking space and it happens: A few days later, a letter arrives in the post and a law firm threatens to sue for trespassing.

This can cost thousands of euros. That's why they offer to issue a cease-and-desist declaration to get away with it more cheaply. But even this cheaper option costs a lot...

A private individual has just bought 16 parking spaces in Viktring, and the declaration to cease and desist costs 355 euros. A dog store has secured four private parking spaces, and parking spaces at a bank have also been reserved for private use.

These two parking spaces in front of a café in Viktring are also privately protected. Otherwise, one use costs 255 euros.

70 percent of parking spaces are private
"In the meantime, 70 percent of all available parking spaces are no longer short-term parking zones, but can only be used privately," complain local residents. The next trap came on Friday. People who briefly visited a stationery store had to pay 255 euros.

In the meantime, many people are earning a feudal living from this business. These parking spaces are protected by a coffee house. "Two spaces should be available for the business," says the owner.
