VW promises a people’s electric car under 20,000 euros!

VW has promised to bring an entry-level electric car under €20,000. Not only customers, but also employees have long been waiting for an electric Volkswagen that actually lives up to the brand name. Now it really seems to be getting concrete: Employees have been given an initial preview.

Times are difficult for VW. Slumping sales, cost-cutting plans, fear among employees. At a works meeting in Wolfsburg today, brand boss Thomas Schäfer presented them with a glimmer of hope and specified the plans for the future of the core brand.

Among other things, a small car with an electric drive was shown, which is intended to mobilize the masses with a base price of less than 20,000 euros and make e-mobility affordable even without a big bank account. "An affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe: this is the Champions League of automotive engineering," enthused Schäfer.

The show car will be presented to the public at the beginning of March. The world premiere of the series production version is scheduled for 2027.

The production model of the VW ID.2all is set to be launched on the market as early as 2026 - at an entry-level price of less than 25,000 euros.

Commitment to the Wolfsburg site
Schäfer said that VW wanted to achieve the "jointly agreed targets" in December in a binding manner: "A decisive step in this is to make e-mobility attractive for everyone - that is our brand promise!" He also made a clear commitment to the location: Wolfsburg should remain the center for innovation and manufacturing expertise. The main plant will set new standards in automobile production.

"The Wolfsburg plant has clear prospects for the future. The agreed relocation of the Gulf to Mexico will create space for modern technologies. New production processes will be introduced in Hall 54. We want to build the electric Golf successor on the new SSP platform there, as well as the high-volume electric T-Roc. This will make Wolfsburg the capital for our new all-electric compact class."

The Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) is the next generation of an all-electric, fully digital and highly scalable mechatronics platform based on a standardized software architecture.

A total of nine new models are to be launched by 2027, including the two models mentioned above. With them, Volkswagen wants to set "new standards as a technologically leading brand in the volume segment".

Now big words must be followed by deeds. This is what the employees will want first and foremost.
