The flames could be seen for miles in the Möll Valley on Saturday night - a farmhouse had started to burn!

140 men from seven fire departments were deployed to the district of Pirkachberg in the municipality of Mörtschach at around 9.30 pm on Friday evening to fight the flames. By 10 p.m., the house, which was largely made of wood, was already ablaze (see picture).

However, fighting the fire proved to be difficult: "Due to the remoteness of the building, three hydrants were used as a water source from a distance of around 1000 meters. A shuttle service with tankers from the Möll was also in operation," explained a firefighter. The Apriach, Heiligenblut, Großkirchheim, Mörtschach, Winklern, Reintal and Lainach volunteer fire departments were deployed.

Four-legged friends fell victim to the flames
Although there were no people in the farmhouse at the time of the fire, the resident's two dogs were: "They probably fell victim to the flames," according to the police. However, the emergency services are not entirely sure: "We were told by the resident that the animals were still in the building. But we can't confirm that. It's still smoking," explains Herbert Fresser, commander of the Mörtschach fire brigade.

The firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent farm building and get the fire under control: "But the farmhouse has burned down to the ground," explains Fresser. The State Office of Criminal Investigation is investigating the cause of the fire.
