Historic! Mikaela Shiffrin has celebrated the 100th World Cup victory of her career, making her the first female ski racer to break the magic mark. 

The US-American won the slalom in Sestriere on Sunday, 0.61 seconds ahead of Croatia's Zrinka Ljutic and 0.64 ahead of her compatriot Paula Moltzan. World Championship bronze medallist Katharina Liensberger finished fourth (+0.76). The 19-year-old Swede Cornelia Öhlund moved up from 23rd place to fifth with the best run time in the second run.

For Shiffrin, however, it was also the 155th podium finish of her career, breaking the record held by Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark. Shiffrin was already on the attack for her 100th victory in Killington in November. However, she suffered an abdominal muscle injury with a seven-centimetre deep wound in the giant slalom and had to undergo surgery. She made her comeback shortly before the World Championships, finishing as team combined world champion and fifth in the slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. In the giant slaloms in Sestriere, she was 25th and missed out on qualifying for the second run.

No more than fourth place possible for Liensberger
After a second and a third place, this was Liensberger's third fourth place in a row. "It was important to hit the tracks. I was too straight in the middle section. I tried to give it my all again on the flat, but there was no more in it for me today. There have already been a few fourth places this season." She will now recharge her batteries and attack again in the final races.

Katharina Truppe dropped from fifth to twelfth place: "It was difficult, you had to hit the tracks, I didn't manage that," said the Carinthian. "I just have to be more relaxed, I was too determined in the second run, then it doesn't work." Katharina Huber finished in 18th place, the easy course settings made it difficult to be fast. "I tried to push, but I didn't understand it at the finish. It was a very special race today."

Gallhuber had the finish in her head
Katharina Gallhuber did not make it past 24th place. She realized that she had a "finish line" in her head. "I should have stayed cooler, it was a run to attack." Franziska Gritsch in 40th, Leonie Raich in 49th, Natalie Falch in 50th and Lisa Hörhager missed out on the second run due to a retirement.

Ljutic took the lead in the discipline World Cup ahead of Swiss World Champion Camille Rast, who retired in the first run on Sunday and suffered a painful bruise on the left side of her body. Liensberger is 105 points behind Ljutic in third place.
