Win a cocktail experience and save food
Food waste is an issue that affects the whole of Austria. Last year alone, one million tons of food ended up in the bin. Cornelia Diesenreiter and her brother Andreas thought that this didn't have to be the case and founded the company Unverschwendet to fight food waste in a unique way.
Since 2015, Unverschwendet has been rescuing surplus fruit and vegetables that are too big, too crooked, too small or too much and turning them into delicacies such as jams, chutneys, spreads and syrups. Unverschwendet has also been represented in local supermarkets with its own brand "Rettenswert" since 2022
A gin that is not a gin
The company, based on Vienna's Schwendermarkt, has also recently launched a completely new product and is working together with the traditional company Manner. The surplus of crispy wafers is collected and taken to the GÖLLES distillery to make gin. However, one problem presented the siblings with an impossible task. The end product cannot be called gin, as the law states that the alcohol in gin must come from agricultural production - and not from rescued wafer crumbs.
Made like gin, tastes like gin - but can't be called that. This is how the "Kein Gin" brand was born and the strong demand proves the siblings right. A crowdfunding campaign was launched in the summer to realize the idea and after a short time, the target of 50,000 euros was reached and production began.
