Women’s giant slalom in Are – LIVE from 9.30 am

World champion Federica Brignone has landed an important stage victory in the battle for the small crystal globe in the giant slalom. The Italian distanced her rival Alice Robinson by a whopping 1.36 seconds on Saturday in Åre and halved the gap to the New Zealander in the rankings to 20 points.

Third place went to Lara Colturi (+1.43), competing for Albania. The only Austrian in the extended top field was Julia Scheib (+2.24) in seventh place.

Shiffrin not in the final
Franziska Gritsch dropped back in the decision and ended up 25th. Stephanie Brunner was eliminated in the second run - as was half-time runner-up Sofia Goggia - but will still take part in the World Cup final in Sun Valley. Mikaela Shiffrin had already dropped out in the morning. Marta Bassino was disqualified between the runs due to ski preparation that did not comply with the fluorine regulations.

Katharina Liensberger was at the start despite not yet being fully recovered from an illness and was therefore not quite fit. She missed out on qualifying for the top 30 final by 2.87 seconds, meaning that the Vorarlberg native also has a poor chance of competing in the giant slalom at the World Cup final. She will not be able to do so via the RTL ranking and is currently 62 points away from 500-point status. There is still the slalom in Åre on Saturday, and Liensberger still has a theoretical chance of winning the small crystal globe.

Truppe closes the "giant slalom chapter"
Lisa Hörhager and Katharina Truppe also failed at the qualification hurdle. The Carinthian then announced in an interview with ORF Radio Ö3 that she would be concentrating on the slalom in future and would no longer be competing in the giant slalom.

 "The giant slalom chapter is closed, it's over for me. I will now become a pure slalom racer, because I have struggled for three years now and can no longer find my way back onto the track. That's why I'm going to leave it at that and call it a day," explained Truppe.
