Dominik Paris triumphed in the super-G

Dominik Paris triumphs! The veteran from South Tyrol took victory in the super-G in Kvitfjell on Sunday ahead of James Crawford (+0.38) and Miha Hrobat (+0.47). Behind them it was extremely close: Marco Odermatt missed the podium by one hundredth, Vincent Kriechmayr in fifth place by two hundredths.

Paris celebrated his 24th World Cup victory, his sixth in Kvitfjell. The Italian had already won the downhill and super-G double on the mountain in Norway in 2019, the year of his World Championship title in the super-G. "If that's the case, then it remains my favorite place," said Paris after his first two wins of the season. He caught all the important passages well. "I was a bit surprised myself to finish with the lead." Crawford lost 0.38 seconds in second place. The winning time was just 1:08.98 minutes.

Kriechmayr falls short of his own standards
After heavy defeats in the two downhill races, the Austrians were a little closer with ninth place in the super-G for Stefan Babinsky (Friday) and Kriechmayr (Saturday). Kriechmayr was just two hundredths of a second off the podium. "I just lacked confidence. I made a lot of turns, so I didn't deserve a podium," said the former world champion.

His performance was "not satisfactory", Kriechmayr emphasized. "I have a different standard. I won here last year." The Upper Austrian's success in Kvitfjell in February 2024 remains the last for the ÖSV in the super-G to date. Austria's men have still not won a World Cup race this season. Before the World Cup final in Sun Valley in the USA, there are only two technical races left on the program next weekend in Hafjell.

"I'm taking it with humor now, because I've been annoyed enough. I hope things go better in the final," said Kriechmayr. "I just have to do my homework and ski with more determination." Stefan Eichberger was the second best Austrian, 0.61 seconds back in ninth place. Lukas Feurstein (14th) and giant slalom world champion Raphael Haaser (16th) were also less than a second behind. Babinsky (+1.25) and Andreas Ploier (+1.29) also finished in the points.

Odermatt collects the bullets
Odermatt was already the winner of the small crystal globe before the race. His only remaining competitor Mattia Casse decided not to start after his crash in the downhill training. The Italian suffered a displaced fracture of his right elbow on Wednesday and will require surgery. For Odermatt, this is the seventh discipline globe of his career, and his fourth overall World Cup is also out of reach for the Swiss.

The result:

Odermatt still has to wait for his first victory in Kvitfjell, however. However, the two second places in the downhill races were a "pretty good sense of achievement" for him, the 27-year-old summed up. The postponed start in the super-G probably didn't really suit the exceptional skier. "It was a bit of a strange race. You know that everything has to go right in a sprint super-G like this."
