With a doubling effect

VW e-up!: An electric car can be this useful!

If that isn't a recipe for success: Volkswagen has significantly upgraded the e-up! micro-car, drastically reduced the price and, above all, almost doubled the usable capacity of the battery to 32.3 kWh. At the same time, the tiny car is surprisingly full-fledged.

The space available is as impressive as ever, because the more powerful batteries even require slightly less installation space than the old ones, thanks to a new cell concept. The promised 180 to 260 kilometers real range seemed absolutely realistic during initial tests and is absolutely sufficient for a city runabout. In and around Valencia (including some highway driving at a good 120 km/h), we achieved an unrepresentative average consumption of 12.4 kWh according to the on-board computer. VW officially states a range of 258 kilometers and an average consumption of 14.5 kWh/100 kilometers - both measured according to WLTP (with the most fuel-efficient equipment).

So small and already a real car!
The seats are comfortable, the chassis is so comfortable that you can drive over speed bumps with ease, and despite being only 3.60 meters long, four adults can last longer than just to the shopping center. The 251 to 959 liter trunk with variable floor also deserves respect.

Thanks to its low center of gravity, the e-up!, which weighs 1160 kilograms, can be driven around corners with ease, and with its 83 hp and 212 Nm electric motor, it is even quite lively. Even the two selectable eco modes with reduced performance are not very paralyzing in city traffic.

It now reaches 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds and stops at 130 km/h. Pleasant: there are five levels to set whether and how much energy the engine recovers when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal. Up to 40 kW of recuperation power is possible, so the brake pedal can usually remain untouched. If you step on it, recuperation always takes place first before the brake is imperceptibly applied.

The battery can also be charged to a maximum of 40 kilowatts at a DC charging station (0 to 80% in around an hour), although this option costs extra. Two-phase alternating current charging with up to 7.2 kW is standard (this takes four hours from zero to 80%). VW's baby Stromer takes more than 16 hours from a household socket until all cells are fully charged.

Cool smartphone dock now standard
Charging and stationary air conditioning are controlled via smartphone. This is plugged into the docking station while driving and offers navigation, multimedia and telematics functions via "maps + more". Everything is now permanently standard, as are the radio system with six loudspeakers and Bluetooth, automatic air conditioning, heated and height-adjustable front seats and rain and light sensors. Safety is ensured by six airbags, city emergency braking and active lane departure warning.

The equipment is pretty complete, the only annoying thing is that the power windows don't have an automatic function. A mini reversing camera, 16-inch rims and parking beeper are available for an extra charge. List price 21,990 euros, the real price is less than 20,000 euros thanks to subsidies. The e-up! is already available to order and the first ones will be delivered at the beginning of 2020.

Bottom line
Now that's a decent electric car! It weighs half as much as the giants like the Audi e-tron, Mercedes EQC & Co, is therefore not only locally emission-free, but actually consumes little energy, and you can afford it for less than 20,000 euros in real terms. If you want to spend even less money, you can also take a look at the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo twins. Incidentally, the combustion versions of the three smallest models in the Group have been discontinued. In view of the e-versions, this really makes sense.

Why?
Very reasonable price for a very reasonable car
Drives very maturely
Has an amazing amount of space

Why not?
If you have to watch every penny, you'll go for the group brothers

Or perhaps ...
... Seat Mii, Skoda Citigo, Smart EQ
